You could see the war room lean forward. Luke McCaffrey at pick No. 216 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving tight end unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Reaching for Hartman left real value on the table behind him.
The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the tight end spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 24th overall pick they get an anchor for the offensive line. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Jonathon Brooks at No. 52 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A need, and now a little less of one.
Cooper DeJean at slot 56 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They let Jermaine Burton come to them and pounced at the Round 3 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They read the board right and Patrick Paul was the payoff at Round 3, Pick 19. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
DeWayne Carter at pick No. 99 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
By-the-book stuff, Khristian Boyd at the 174th pick squarely in line with his ranking. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Luke McCaffrey in pick 216 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Trevin Wallace at pick No. 233 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Sam Hartman at slot 244 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
