The Commanders spent the pick that matters most on Caleb Williams, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
The McCaffrey steal is the beam this whole class leans on. The interior defensive lineman spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster.
The kind of weekend a front office frames and hangs on the wall.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 8th overall pick they get the face of the franchise at fair value.
Chop Robinson in Round 2, Pick 10 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
T.J. Tampa at No. 57 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in the 67th pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
Brenden Rice in pick No. 69 is fair value, right on his grade. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Blake Corum at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Christian Haynes slipping to slot 88 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They read the board right and Zak Zinter was the payoff at pick 105. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Dominick Puni in the 109th overall pick is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Javon Foster at Round 5, Pick 2. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Cam Hart in the 143rd pick, just ahead of his grade. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
You do not let a wide receiver like Luke McCaffrey reach pick 179 and blink. They did not. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A tidy little value on Andru Phillips in slot 181, a step better than break-even. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Brandon Coleman slid further than he should have, and No. 188 is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jaylan Ford in the Round 6 slot is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
Taking Josh Proctor in pick No. 216 is close to grand larceny; a safety that good had no business lasting this long. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A straight-up fair deal on Kenny Logan Jr. at slot 220, value and slot in agreement. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
They let De'Corian Clark come to them and pounced at the Round 7 slot. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sam Hartman in No. 241 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
No edge and no loss on Trey Taylor in Round 7, Pick 31; it is a wash and a sensible one. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
Brevyn Spann-Ford at pick 256 is money in the bank, a tight end taken below his worth. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
