You build a draft on nights like this. Carson Schwesinger had no business being available in slot 117, and the Cowboys did the only sane thing and turned in the card. Some smart calls, some head-scratchers, and a C in the wash.
The Thornton Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A small leak at the table, if not a fatal one.
Hit on Luther Burden III and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
They took Luther Burden III at par in slot 15, which is nothing to complain about. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
In pick No. 24 they get a lead back with juice. A real need, handled.
Tyler Warren at the 44th overall pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
A slide stopped in Round 3, Pick 11, with Dylan Sampson worth more than the price. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
By-the-book stuff, Tate Ratledge at the 76th pick squarely in line with his ranking. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They barely believed it either: Darien Porter still on the board at No. 97. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Quietly one of the better values of the day, Charles Grant at the Round 4 slot. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
You do not let a linebacker like Carson Schwesinger reach pick 117 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Smael Mondon Jr. at the 138th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Kurtis Rourke in No. 139 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Value with a capital V on Kobe King in the Round 5 slot, a genuine coup. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They robbed the room for Oronde Gadsden II here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It fills a real need, too.
A reach for Dont'e Thornton Jr. in pick 172; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A reasonable price with a little left over, DJ Giddens in Round 5, Pick 35. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Addison West at slot 190 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Cam Jackson at pick No. 211 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Hunter Wohler in No. 249 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
