Whoever sat across the table from the Chargers should ask for a receipt. They cleaned the room out, prying loose far more value than they gave up, and it was the quiet MVP of their weekend.
They banked enough surplus on Speights to cover a lot of smaller sins. That quarterback hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall. The Barner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 30 they get a building block for the line at fair value. A real need, handled.
Good price on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in No. 41, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Edgerrin Cooper in pick No. 62 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
Brandon Dorlus in the 69th pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Bucky Irving in the Round 3 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
McKinnley Jackson in slot 93 lands just on the right side of the ledger. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Tykee Smith at Round 4, Pick 6 is the proof. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Drake Nugent at pick No. 139 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Javon Baker at the Round 6 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They left a pile of value on the table to take AJ Barner this early at pick 184. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A tidy bit of business in the 223rd pick, where Isaiah Williams graded well above the range. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Omar Speights here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
Brevyn Spann-Ford slipping to the 256th overall pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
