Every other box got a look, but quarterback did not. The Chargers will head to camp with the same hole they walked in with. Solid and sensible more than spectacular: a B.
If Powers-Johnson pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. They squeezed a little extra out of every move they made. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 11 they get a problem off the edge. The biggest hole, addressed.
In the 23rd pick they get a plug-and-play piece up front, even if it was a touch early. A real need, handled.
No edge and no loss on Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the Round 2 slot; it is a wash and a sensible one. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Xavier Legette at par in Round 3, Pick 5, which is nothing to complain about. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Braelon Allen in the 105th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They went early on Blake Fisher in No. 110, and the value did not follow. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Jaylin Simpson in pick No. 140 lands just on the right side of the ledger. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tykee Smith at slot 167 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the safety. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
A straight-up fair deal on Fabien Lovett at slot 181, value and slot in agreement. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jordan Magee in the 225th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
By-the-book stuff, LaDarius Henderson at pick 253 squarely in line with his ranking. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
