Dallas Cowboys

The steal of the weekend belongs to the Cowboys and Simon: B.

The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: Cody Simon, the No. 135 name on the board, sitting there at pick 249 like a gift left on the doorstep.

The Thornton Jr. pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. The dealing alone would carry a lesser class.

For all the activity, cornerback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.

Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.12 · Pick 12 · Ashton Jeanty · RB · rank 2
In the 12th overall pick they get a bell-cow for the offense at a price that makes it sweeter.
R1.20 · Pick 20 · Luther Burden III · WR · rank 13
Nothing to complain about; Luther Burden III went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Nick Emmanwori · S · rank 18
Nick Emmanwori in No. 44 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. A minor itch, scratched.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Alfred Collins · DT · rank 56
Alfred Collins in the 76th pick is a gift, value that borders on unfair. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.37 · Pick 138 · Dylan Sampson · RB · rank 65
Steal is underselling it; Dylan Sampson at Round 4, Pick 37 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. The roster fit checks out.
R4.38 · Pick 139 · Oronde Gadsden II · TE · rank 142
Oronde Gadsden II in pick 139 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R5.11 · Pick 150 · Dont'e Thornton Jr. · WR · rank 185
They left a pile of value on the table to take Dont'e Thornton Jr. this early at slot 150. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R5.31 · Pick 170 · Smael Mondon Jr. · LB · rank 110
The board fumbled Smael Mondon Jr. all the way to the Round 5 slot, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R6.12 · Pick 190 · Nazir Stackhouse · DL · rank 199
A conviction pick on Nazir Stackhouse at No. 190 that the board grades a round light. It fills a real need, too.
R6.33 · Pick 211 · Cam Skattebo · RB · rank 105
They will replay Cam Skattebo at the 211th pick for years; that is how good the value is. A need, and now a little less of one.
R7.31 · Pick 249 · Cody Simon · LB · rank 135
A linebacker of that caliber at the 249th overall pick is the definition of value, full stop. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
