The Chargers clearly saw something nobody else did in Grayson Murphy, taking him 35 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. The Guyton steal is the beam this whole class leans on.
It is a steep hill from here, and the grade knows it.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a red-zone target to build around. A real need, handled.
T.J. Tampa in pick No. 37 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Tyler Guyton slid further than he should have, and the 54th pick is lovely value for the offensive lineman. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Sedrick Van Pran at No. 65 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Payton Wilson at Round 3, Pick 5 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor itch, scratched.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Blake Corum in slot 81. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
No edge and no loss on Khyree Jackson in slot 102; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Grayson Murphy this early at the 133rd pick. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
