Start where it matters. The Patriots took Michael Penix Jr. to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. One of the weekend's best, top to bottom, and a A- to show for it.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. However the rest shakes out, Smith at that price is a win they earned.
It is a haul that will look even better come September.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 9 they get the face of the franchise at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
They did well to land Adonai Mitchell in Round 2, Pick 2, just ahead of his grade. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They took Kiran Amegadjie at par in slot 68, which is nothing to complain about. A need, and now a little less of one.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Javon Baker at the 103rd pick is the proof. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A clean, defensible pick in No. 122 with a little surplus value in Elijah Jones. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They paid a round early for Justin Eboigbe in the Round 5 slot, more than the board wanted. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Tykee Smith at the 180th overall pick is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Erick All in pick No. 193 is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A tidy bit of business in slot 231, where JD Bertrand graded well above the range. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
