Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the Round 5 slot on Taylen Green, a name most had 122 spots down the list.
That is a running back worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. They punted on offensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and offensive lineman is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 5 they get a centerpiece for the ground game. A clean fit for the roster.
In the 13th overall pick they get a double-digit-sack hope at fair value. Need was not the driver here.
In the Round 1 slot they get an enforcer at safety at a price that makes it sweeter. More want than need.
Domani Jackson at slot 44 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
The board fumbled Isaiah Bond all the way to the 48th pick, and they scooped it up. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Alfred Collins at pick No. 70 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Circle this one: Omarion Hampton at the 78th pick is a fall that decides a draft. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Gunnar Helm at the Round 4 slot is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Dont'e Thornton Jr. in slot 119, miles early. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They reached into another round for Taylen Green, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. The roster fit checks out.
They robbed the room for Raheim Sanders here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Value said wait; J.Michael Sturdivant in Round 5, Pick 32 says they were not listening. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A linebacker of that caliber at pick No. 171 is the definition of value, full stop. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They will replay Smael Mondon Jr. at pick 190 for years; that is how good the value is. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Somehow Nicholas Singleton was still sitting there in the 209th pick, and they pounced on premier running back value. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
