Dallas Cowboys

The phones sank the Cowboys this weekend: D-.

Nobody else had Keith Randolph Jr. anywhere near pick No. 174. The Cowboys did, by 44 spots, and that gap is the whole story. Too much went sideways, and the D- is the honest tally.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. They punted on quarterback, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Trading back for volume was the quiet throughline of their weekend.

Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.8 · Pick 8 · Olumuyiwa Fashanu · OT · rank 8
In Round 1, Pick 8 they get an anchor for the offensive line. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R1.24 · Pick 24 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 28
In the 24th pick they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.24 · Pick 56 · Zach Frazier · C · rank 62
Zach Frazier at slot 56 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 106
Braelon Allen at No. 93 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.8 · Pick 108 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 123
McKinnley Jackson in pick No. 108 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 132
Mohamed Kamara at the 109th overall pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.30 · Pick 130 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 136
Jarrian Jones in the 130th pick is fair value, right on his grade. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.38 · Pick 174 · Keith Randolph Jr. · DL-EDGE · rank 218
Keith Randolph Jr. at pick No. 174 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Trevin Wallace · LB · rank 233
They paid a round early for Trevin Wallace in pick 216, more than the board wanted. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R7.13 · Pick 233 · Ryan Watts · CB · rank 258
Ryan Watts at the Round 7 slot is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.24 · Pick 244 · Bub Means · WR · rank 245
Bub Means at slot 244 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
