Boards are made to be trusted, and the Cowboys shredded theirs for DeMonte Capehart. He came off 54 spots early, and the room will hear about it.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Everything downstream of Caleb Williams depends on Caleb Williams, and the building knows it. For all the activity, tight end went untouched, which is hard to explain.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
Add it up and it is a weekend the front office will hope everyone forgets, tight end very much included.
Pick-by-Pick
In No. 1 they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
Chop Robinson at Round 2, Pick 3 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A minor need, but a need all the same.
A reach for Kiran Amegadjie in the 43rd overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Payton Wilson in pick No. 56, and the value did not follow. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Trey Benson in pick 66 is fair value, right on his grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They did well to land Roman Wilson in the 87th pick, just ahead of his grade. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kris Abrams-Draine in slot 109 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No drama and no debate, James Williams went about where he belonged in the 124th overall pick. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Delmar Glaze in Round 5, Pick 38. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached a country mile for DeMonte Capehart at the 212th pick, and the board is aghast. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They took Xavier Thomas at par in pick 245, which is nothing to complain about. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
