The board owed the Texans one, and it paid up: Ty'Ron Hopper, the No. 153 name on the board, sitting there at slot 239 like a gift left on the doorstep.
They will need Jones to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it. The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
The imported veterans give this class a floor the draft picks could not on their own.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get juice off the edge, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
They will replay Xavier Legette at pick No. 59 for years; that is how good the value is. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in slot 63: Ja'Tavion Sanders for less than the market said. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Cooper Beebe at pick 70 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in the 85th pick, where Junior Colson graded well above the range. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Leonard Taylor III at Round 3, Pick 24 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Kris Abrams-Draine in the 123rd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
They paid sticker price for James Williams in No. 127, and that is fine. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Christian Jones well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Ty'Ron Hopper in pick No. 239 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jase McClellan in No. 248 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
