The Patriots put a flag in the ground for Jeff Caldwell, 58 picks before anyone else would have, and the value took the hit. Good, not great, and the B- says as much.
They went 8 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for. The offense got the lion's share of the attention.
Nothing gained and nothing lost at the table.
A workmanlike haul that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 31 they get protection for the quarterback, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
A tidy little value on Christen Miller in the 63rd pick, a step better than break-even. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Jacob Rodriguez in No. 74 is fair value, right on his grade. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
A wild overpay on Jeff Caldwell in slot 131, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Tanner Koziol at Round 5, Pick 31 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It fills a real need, too.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Patrick Payton well ahead of where he belonged. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They took VJ Payne at par in the Round 6 slot, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Cole Payton in slot 202 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A real head-scratcher, Terion Stewart in Round 6, Pick 31 is miles ahead of his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Enrique Cruz Jr. at the 247th overall pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
