Call it larceny. DeMonte Capehart sat on the board until Round 7, Pick 8, and the Steelers did not need to be asked twice. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
They punted on edge rusher, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. The Davis pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with edge rusher and running back still on the board.
They will need Davis to outplay his draft slot in a hurry to justify it.
In short, they left a little better than they arrived, which is the whole idea.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 21 they get a building block for the line. Need was not the driver here.
Anthony Hill Jr. in No. 55 is a bargain the rest of the room will envy. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Germie Bernard at slot 76 is the proof. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
Bryce Lance in the Round 3 slot is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Devin Moore at the 99th pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They barely believed it either: Bud Clark still on the board at pick No. 121. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher and running back to take J.C. Davis, an offensive lineman that was not the priority.
A tidy bit of business in Round 4, Pick 35, where Jack Endries graded well above the range. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Taking Julian Neal in pick No. 161 is close to grand larceny; a cornerback that good had no business lasting this long. The roster fit checks out.
Somehow Cade Klubnik was still sitting there in the Round 6 slot, and they pounced on premier quarterback value. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
You do not let an interior defensive lineman like DeMonte Capehart reach Round 7, Pick 8 and blink. They did not. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
