Call it a hunch or call it a gamble, but the Cowboys spent the Round 5 slot on Justin Jefferson, a name most had 51 spots down the list. Call it a sensible B, earned the boring way.
The dealing alone would carry a lesser class. The wide receiver spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at.
Spending an early pick on edge rusher with wide receiver, quarterback and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 12th pick they get an island corner at fair value. The biggest hole, addressed.
In No. 24 they get a double-digit-sack hope, though they paid up to get him. More want than need.
A want over a need in Round 3, Pick 28: Caden Curry adds an edge rusher while wide receiver, quarterback and other spots keeps waiting.
A wild overpay on Justin Jefferson in pick No. 152, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
No edge and no loss on DJ Campbell in slot 180; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A reach for Isaiah Nwokobia in pick 216; a little patience would have been rewarded. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They talked themselves into Nick Barrett at pick No. 218, and the board did not agree. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
