The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Michael Penix Jr., and the whole operation now runs on his development.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. That is a safety worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.
The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Gore Jr. reach is the anchor dragging on the value grade.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 4 they get a cornerstone up front. A real need, handled.
In pick 16 they get a long-term answer under center at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
Xavier Legette in the 34th overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Payton Wilson at the Round 3 slot is money in the bank, a linebacker taken below his worth. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at No. 95, value and slot in agreement. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Trevor Keegan. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They robbed the room for Tykee Smith here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Frank Gore Jr. in Round 6, Pick 34 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
