You can fall in love with a player. You are not supposed to marry him in the wrong round. The Packers did exactly that with Ben Sinnott in Round 3, Pick 35. The final tally is a middling C.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Cole falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch. Job largely done: edge rusher settled and 8 of 8 of the wish list covered.
In the end, a coin-flip class: fine today, with a wide range of outcomes ahead.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in pick No. 48; it is a wash and a sensible one. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They paid sticker price for Payton Wilson in slot 53, and that is fine. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
No drama and no debate, Javon Bullard went about where he belonged in Round 2, Pick 26. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
By-the-book stuff, Blake Corum at pick 82 squarely in line with his ranking. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Max Melton slipping to the 88th pick is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Gabriel Murphy at par in the Round 3 slot, which is nothing to complain about. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They went early on Zak Zinter in pick No. 95, and the value did not follow. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A real head-scratcher, Javon Foster in the Round 3 slot is miles ahead of his ranking. It fills a real need, too.
Ben Sinnott at pick 98 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jarrian Jones at the 124th pick jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nice patience on Sataoa Laumea, who had no business lasting to Round 4, Pick 26. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A wild overpay on Tykee Smith in slot 131, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
Michael Pratt in the 133rd overall pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Luke McCaffrey in No. 151 is fair value, right on his grade. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A straight-up fair deal on Malik Mustapha at slot 169, value and slot in agreement. Nice player, but the depth chart did not need him here.
They reached into another round for Gabe Hall, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
Myles Cole at Round 6, Pick 37 is money in the bank, a edge rusher taken below his worth. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
