Some picks age like wine; Javon Foster at the 88th pick will need to, sitting 33 spots clear of his grade. It grades a D-, and the process earned it.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback and wide receiver open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to.
The quarterback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. Landing Jones that late papers over a lot of smaller sins.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even, and quarterback is still a hole.
Pick-by-Pick
A tidy bit of business in No. 50, where Kamari Lassiter graded well above the range. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Junior Colson at pick No. 56 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending pick 58 on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. with quarterback and wide receiver unsolved.
A conviction pick on Cooper Beebe at Round 2, Pick 32 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Blake Corum. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A straight-up fair deal on Gabriel Murphy at the Round 3 slot, value and slot in agreement. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Javon Foster at No. 88 is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value said wait; Cole Bishop in pick No. 91 says they were not listening. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A big swing on Tyler Davis at pick 95, well ahead of any board in the building. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
A surprising call. With quarterback and wide receiver still to address, they spent the 98th overall pick on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
Ben Sinnott at the 126th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Jarrian Jones in Round 5, Pick 33 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Josh Proctor in the Round 6 slot is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
By-the-book stuff, Tanor Bortolini at slot 219 squarely in line with his ranking. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
