The war room fell hard for Erick All, and it showed at the 217th pick: 75 picks ahead of a board that had other ideas. The process wobbled, and the D is where it lands.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through edge rusher.
It is not that Hicks is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first. On value alone, Harris makes the weekend a net positive.
Bottom line, they will need several of these picks to beat their grades just to break even.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 20 they get an anchor for the offensive line at fair value. A clean fit for the roster.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Kris Abrams-Draine in the 39th pick. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They took Calen Bullock at par in the Round 2 slot, which is nothing to complain about. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
Jonathon Brooks in slot 56 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They jumped the gun on Christian Haynes, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
D.J. James in the 82nd overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Junior Colson at the 111th pick is a conviction pick that outran the value. A minor need, but a need all the same.
The needs board was loud and they turned it down, spending the Round 4 slot on Jaden Hicks with edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved.
They bypassed pressing needs at edge rusher, quarterback and other spots to take Malachi Moore, a safety that was not the priority.
Michael Barrett at the 157th overall pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
They did well to land Billy Bowman Jr. in Round 5, Pick 26, just ahead of his grade. It is more luxury than necessity; they were already set here.
Tre Harris at pick 189 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Erick All at pick No. 217 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They went early on Kamal Hadden in slot 219, and the value did not follow. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They reached a country mile for Frank Gore Jr. at No. 232, and the board is aghast. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
