There is conviction, and then there is this. The Packers took Solomon Byrd a full 42 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The trade table is where this weekend went wrong. It is not that Wilson is a bad player; it is that the Packers had louder needs to answer first.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped wide receiver, which is a strange place to end up. On the needs board they went 6 of 8, with edge rusher the one that mattered most.
Hit on Junior Colson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
Junior Colson at the 51st overall pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. It adds depth where they could use a little.
A surprising call. With wide receiver and tight end still to address, they spent pick 52 on Payton Wilson, a linebacker they were not short of.
They zigged when the board said zag, taking Jeremiah Trotter Jr. at linebacker with wide receiver and tight end open.
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Max Melton. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Blake Corum at the Round 3 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Gabriel Murphy in slot 88 is fair value, right on his grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Javon Foster at the 91st pick is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
They reached a country mile for Jarrian Jones at slot 98, and the board is aghast. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
No drama and no debate, Zak Zinter went about where he belonged in the 99th overall pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Nothing to complain about; Tyler Davis went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Marist Liufau at No. 169 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A straight-up fair deal on Joe Milton III at pick 202, value and slot in agreement. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A wild overpay on Solomon Byrd in the Round 6 slot, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
