Green Bay Packers

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Packers to a D-.

Nobody had Jarrian Jones this high, and it is not close. The Packers reached 50 spots to get him at pick No. 99. A weekend that fought the value and lost, hence the D-.

They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back. The Colson pick is fine in a vacuum, less so with tight end still on the board. They will regret leaving tight end for another day if the season turns on it.

Mustapha falling to them is the kind of break a good board is built to catch.

In short, the board sent warnings, and they will be hoping it was wrong.

Pick-by-Pick

R2.18 · Pick 50 · Payton Wilson · LB · rank 43
Payton Wilson at slot 50 is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
R2.26 · Pick 58 · Jonathon Brooks · RB · rank 44
Jonathon Brooks slid further than he should have, and No. 58 is lovely value for the running back. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 50
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Junior Colson adds a linebacker and leaves tight end untouched.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Max Melton · CB · rank 63
No edge and no loss on Max Melton in pick No. 64; it is a wash and a sensible one. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.15 · Pick 79 · Gabriel Murphy · DL-EDGE · rank 88
They paid up for Gabriel Murphy at Round 3, Pick 15 when waiting would have done the job. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R3.25 · Pick 88 · Zak Zinter · OG · rank 104
A reach on Zak Zinter in the 88th pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
R3.34 · Pick 97 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 121
They reached a country mile for Javon Foster at slot 97, and the board is aghast. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R3.36 · Pick 99 · Jarrian Jones · CB · rank 149
They talked themselves into Jarrian Jones at Round 3, Pick 36, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R4.16 · Pick 116 · Mekhi Wingo · DT · rank 113
A tidy little value on Mekhi Wingo in the 116th pick, a step better than break-even. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Johnny Wilson · WR · rank 128
Johnny Wilson in pick No. 127 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.12 · Pick 148 · Beau Brade · S · rank 139
They let Beau Brade come to them and pounced at pick 148. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R5.32 · Pick 168 · Malik Mustapha · S · rank 153
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Malik Mustapha at No. 168 is the proof. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
R5.39 · Pick 175 · Joe Milton III · QB · rank 199
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Joe Milton III. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.29 · Pick 204 · Tanor Bortolini · C · rank 217
A reach for Tanor Bortolini in the 204th overall pick; a little patience would have been rewarded. The roster fit checks out.
R6.41 · Pick 216 · Josh Proctor · S · rank 215
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Josh Proctor. Depth on depth, at a spot that was hardly crying out.
