The Patriots spent the pick that matters most on Jayden Daniels, and a roster that has been waiting on a passer can start to take shape.
They banked enough surplus on Knight to cover a lot of smaller sins. The edge rusher spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. They are betting Suamataia proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
They left with wide receiver solved and the rest of the wish list mostly ticked off.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the edge rusher spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 6 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Brian Thomas Jr. slipping to the Round 2 slot is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A reach on Kingsley Suamataia in the 47th overall pick; the board had better options right there. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They paid sticker price for Patrick Paul in pick No. 68, and that is fine. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A slide stopped in the 104th pick, with Trey Benson worth more than the price. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Chau Smith-Wade in No. 136. It adds depth where they could use a little.
No drama and no debate, M.J. Devonshire went about where he belonged in Round 6, Pick 7. They added to a strength when a need was still open elsewhere.
Tyrice Knight is a better player than pick 229 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
