When a board-topper like Jonah Elliss slides to pick 87, you do not overthink it, and the Cowboys did not. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B.
They will regret leaving offensive lineman for another day if the season turns on it. The Bywater pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over.
Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 3 of 8 of the wish list covered. The back end got a real overhaul.
Good work on the whole, with offensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a press-man option on the boundary. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They paid sticker price for Ja'Lynn Polk in Round 2, Pick 24, and that is fine. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
Jonah Elliss at the 87th pick is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Jaden Hicks at No. 124 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A reach on Ben Bywater in the 174th overall pick; the board had better options right there. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Bru McCoy at slot 212 is the steal of the weekend, a first-round talent at a bargain-bin price. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
The board fumbled Dwight McGlothern all the way to pick 245, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
