The search is over. The Patriots handed the keys to Drake Maye, and the whole operation now runs on his development. A dependable weekend that grades out a B.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. If Carter pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about.
Good work on the whole, with interior defensive lineman the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term answer under center. A clean fit for the roster.
In pick No. 27 they get a matchup problem out wide at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate edge rusher, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Chop Robinson. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Patrick Paul in the 46th overall pick is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A straight-up fair deal on Khyree Jackson at No. 103, value and slot in agreement. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
No edge and no loss on Ben Sinnott in the 139th pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Jaylan Ford at Round 6, Pick 7 is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the linebacker. A minor itch, scratched.
Ethan Driskell in slot 188 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Nathaniel Watson at Round 7, Pick 4 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. A luxury on a unit that was already in good shape.
Value said wait; Ja'Had Carter in the 232nd overall pick says they were not listening. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
