Somebody in slot 164 was going to get robbed, and it turned out to be the rest of the league. The Commanders sat still while Graham Mertz, the No. 102 name on the board, slid all the way to them, then sprinted to the podium.
The running back spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Collins pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. A modest surplus at the table, banked quietly.
Good work on the whole, with running back the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
No edge and no loss on Travis Hunter in pick No. 3; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Emery Jones Jr. in slot 36 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Danny Stutsman in Round 3, Pick 4. It adds depth where they could use a little.
They took Luke Lachey at par in No. 100, which is nothing to complain about. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Gabe Jacas was the payoff at the 132nd pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
A top-tier quarterback at a bargain, Graham Mertz in the Round 6 slot, plain and simple. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Lathan Ransom in the 174th overall pick. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid up for Beaux Collins at pick 224 when waiting would have done the job. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
