The Erick All pick is the one that will follow the Packers into the fall. They took him 60 spots ahead of his grade, and the board is not shy about saying so.
With edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a long-term starter on the line at a price that makes it sweeter. A real need, handled.
Fair-plus on Kris Abrams-Draine, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
A quiet steal in the 55th overall pick: J.J. McCarthy for less than the market said. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Rod Moore. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A clean, defensible pick in pick 82 with a little surplus value in Caelen Carson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
No edge and no loss on Christian Mahogany in pick No. 87; it is a wash and a sensible one. A need, and now a little less of one.
The eyebrow-raiser of the weekend. They went safety with Beau Brade while clear needs at edge rusher, wide receiver and other spots sat open.
Good price on Junior Colson in Round 4, Pick 23, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A straight-up fair deal on Isaiah Adams at the Round 4 slot, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Cody Schrader is a better player than slot 189 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Frank Gore Jr. in pick No. 211 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
A big swing on Delmar Glaze at pick 217, well ahead of any board in the building. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Willie Roberts in the 219th overall pick. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Erick All at the 232nd pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
