Kansas City Chiefs

A costly weekend of dealing drags the Chiefs to a C.

Somebody took the Chiefs to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.

Reaching for Hopper left real value on the table behind him. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Green. If this class has a fault line, it runs straight through quarterback.

The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.

Hit on Troy Franklin and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Troy Franklin · WR · rank 33
In pick No. 32 they get a true top target. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.32 · Pick 64 · Mike Sainristil · CB · rank 75
The board had cheaper options than Mike Sainristil at slot 64, and it noticed. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
R3.32 · Pick 95 · Renardo Green · S · rank 76
Renardo Green at Round 3, Pick 32 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It adds depth where they could use a little.
R4.4 · Pick 104 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 119
Javon Foster in the 104th pick is early enough to raise a brow, if not a full objection. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.14 · Pick 114 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 122
They liked Theo Johnson enough to skip the value, taking him in the 114th overall pick. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R4.32 · Pick 132 · McKinnley Jackson · DL · rank 123
McKinnley Jackson at the Round 4 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. It fills a real need, too.
R5.2 · Pick 138 · Justin Eboigbe · DL-EDGE · rank 148
They paid up for Justin Eboigbe at pick 138 when waiting would have done the job. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.17 · Pick 153 · Ty'Ron Hopper · LB · rank 182
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Ty'Ron Hopper well ahead of where he belonged. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R5.23 · Pick 159 · Jacob Cowing · WR · rank 147
They read the board right and Jacob Cowing was the payoff at pick No. 159. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R5.37 · Pick 173 · Trente Jones · OT · rank 195
Trente Jones at No. 173 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R6.37 · Pick 212 · Rasheen Ali · RB · rank 207
Nothing to complain about; Rasheen Ali went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R7.16 · Pick 236 · Edefuan Ulofoshio · LB · rank 237
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edefuan Ulofoshio. The roster fit checks out.
R7.32 · Pick 252 · Tyler Owens · S · rank 255
Tyler Owens in the 252nd pick is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
