You could see the war room lean forward. Chris Paul Jr. at pick 138 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did. Call it a C+ and check back in two years.
Overpaying at the table undid a lot of the good work elsewhere. The Conner pick is the one the value grade keeps tripping over. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up.
Hit on Will Johnson and the swing picks, and this ages a lot better than it grades today.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.12
· Pick 12
· Will Johnson
· CB
· rank 8
In the 12th overall pick they get a ballhawk on the outside. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.12
· Pick 44
· Omarion Hampton
· RB
· rank 30
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Omarion Hampton in pick No. 44. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R3.12
· Pick 76
· Dylan Sampson
· RB
· rank 65
Dylan Sampson slipping to pick 76 is the kind of luck good rooms make for themselves. The roster fit checks out.
R3.35
· Pick 99
· Savion Williams
· WR
· rank 98
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Savion Williams. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R4.9
· Pick 110
· Smael Mondon Jr.
· LB
· rank 111
Smael Mondon Jr. in the Round 4 slot is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.37
· Pick 138
· Chris Paul Jr.
· LB
· rank 88
Taking Chris Paul Jr. in Round 4, Pick 37 is close to grand larceny; a linebacker that good had no business lasting this long. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
R4.38
· Pick 139
· Jared Wilson
· C
· rank 109
A top-tier offensive lineman at a bargain, Jared Wilson in slot 139, plain and simple. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R5.31
· Pick 170
· Mitchell Evans
· TE
· rank 154
They read the board right and Mitchell Evans was the payoff at the 170th pick. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R5.33
· Pick 172
· Tyler Shough
· QB
· rank 153
Tyler Shough at pick 172 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. A need, and now a little less of one.
R5.35
· Pick 174
· Dont'e Thornton Jr.
· WR
· rank 185
They liked Dont'e Thornton Jr. enough to skip the value, taking him in pick No. 174. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
R6.12
· Pick 190
· Hayden Conner
· OG
· rank 213
Hayden Conner at No. 190 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R7.31
· Pick 249
· Clay Webb
· OG
· rank 251
Clay Webb at slot 249 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
