The board owed the Cowboys one, and it paid up: D'Angelo Ponds, the No. 47 name on the board, sitting there at the Round 3 slot like a gift left on the doorstep. No fireworks, but a solid B.
For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain. Reaching for Caldwell left real value on the table behind him.
Wide receiver is handled and the depth chart looks a good deal healthier for it.
Add it up and it is a good, unfussy class.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 12 they get a downhill thumper at linebacker. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
In the 20th overall pick they get a green-dot type in the middle at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
D'Angelo Ponds at pick No. 92 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Steal is underselling it; Zakee Wheatley at the 120th pick is a heist with the alarm still ringing. A minor itch, scratched.
They did well to land Isaiah World in pick 152, just ahead of his grade. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They took Tanner Koziol at par in No. 160, which is nothing to complain about. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
The board had cheaper options than Jeff Caldwell at the Round 5 slot, and it noticed. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
Domani Jackson in Round 5, Pick 40 lands just on the right side of the ledger. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Thaddeus Dixon at pick 218 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
