The move everyone will second-guess came early. The Cowboys reached some 76 spots for Gabe Hall, and value like that does not grow back. A F, plain and simple.
The trades bled value they could not afford to lose. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Allen.
The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.
In the end, a class that has to defy its grades just to matter.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 4 they get protection for the quarterback. The biggest hole, addressed.
In slot 27 they get a ballhawk on the back end, though they paid up to get him. More want than need.
A real head-scratcher, T'Vondre Sweat in the 35th overall pick is miles ahead of his ranking. The roster fit checks out.
No edge and no loss on Jeremiah Trotter Jr. in pick No. 56; it is a wash and a sensible one. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Audric Estime in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A wild overpay on Joe Milton III in pick 87, the sort that defines a class for the wrong reasons. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Gabe Hall well ahead of where he belonged. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
The board fumbled Braelon Allen all the way to slot 174, and they scooped it up. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
They talked themselves into MJ Sherman at Round 6, Pick 37, and the board did not agree. Where it fits the depth chart is the real question.
