New York Giants

The Giants fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B+.

Nobody had Spencer Rattler this high, and it is not close. The Giants reached 75 spots to get him at the 44th overall pick. Good, not great, and the B+ says as much.

The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.

The future picks help the war chest more than the win-now roster. They went 8 of 9 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.

Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.23 · Pick 23 · Brian Thomas Jr. · WR · rank 26
In the 23rd overall pick they get a home-run threat at receiver. The biggest hole, addressed.
R2.12 · Pick 44 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 119
They reached into another round for Spencer Rattler, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
R2.15 · Pick 47 · Christian Haynes · OG · rank 62
A reach for Christian Haynes in Round 2, Pick 15; a little patience would have been rewarded. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R2.27 · Pick 59 · Javon Bullard · S · rank 58
Javon Bullard at the Round 2 slot is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.12 · Pick 76 · Trey Benson · RB · rank 89
A conviction pick on Trey Benson at No. 76 that the board grades a round light. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R3.31 · Pick 94 · Mohamed Kamara · DL-EDGE · rank 133
This one needs a full-page explanation: Mohamed Kamara in slot 94, miles early. The roster fit checks out.
R4.7 · Pick 107 · Isaac Guerendo · RB · rank 129
Isaac Guerendo at the 107th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R4.9 · Pick 109 · Christian Jones · OT · rank 132
The board screamed and they did not listen, reaching into the next round for Christian Jones. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R4.12 · Pick 112 · Luke McCaffrey · WR · rank 149
A big swing on Luke McCaffrey at No. 112, well ahead of any board in the building. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
R4.21 · Pick 121 · Theo Johnson · TE · rank 124
A straight-up fair deal on Theo Johnson at Round 4, Pick 21, value and slot in agreement. A need, and now a little less of one.
R4.31 · Pick 131 · James Williams · S · rank 125
James Williams at the 131st overall pick is a sound buy, the sort that quietly helps a class. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R5.5 · Pick 141 · Brennan Jackson · DE-EDGE · rank 155
They paid a round early for Brennan Jackson in slot 141, more than the board wanted. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R6.8 · Pick 183 · Jordan Jefferson · DT · rank 184
No drama and no debate, Jordan Jefferson went about where he belonged in pick No. 183. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R6.28 · Pick 203 · Javontae Jean-Baptiste · DE-EDGE · rank 217
Javontae Jean-Baptiste at pick 203 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R7.18 · Pick 238 · Taulia Tagovailoa · QB · rank 287
They left a pile of value on the table to take Taulia Tagovailoa this early at the 238th pick. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R7.27 · Pick 247 · Jordan Whittington · WR · rank 248
They paid sticker price for Jordan Whittington in slot 247, and that is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
