The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took Al Blades Jr. at slot 256 regardless, 71 picks early. A dependable weekend that grades out a B-.
They covered a lot of ground and still skipped interior defensive lineman, which is a strange place to end up. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Building through the lines is a philosophy, and they stuck to it.
A tidy weekend of work that should hold up just fine.
Pick-by-Pick
In the Round 1 slot they get a blindside protector. A clean fit for the roster.
They reached into another round for Chris Braswell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Trey Benson in Round 3, Pick 5 is fair value, right on his grade. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A conviction pick on Malik Washington at pick 106 that the board grades a round light. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Dallin Holker at pick No. 139 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. It fills a real need, too.
No edge and no loss on Jaylan Ford in No. 183; it is a wash and a sensible one. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
A real head-scratcher, Carson Steele in No. 223 is miles ahead of his ranking. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Al Blades Jr. well ahead of where he belonged. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
