You could see the war room lean forward. Smael Mondon Jr. at the 145th overall pick is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
Every deal seemed to tilt their way, which is not luck. A whole weekend of picks and edge rusher is somehow still a want.
Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher and quarterback open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. The Nico Collins pickup adds a known quantity to a class of unknowns.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
R1.23
· Pick 23
· Tetairoa McMillan
· WR
· rank 10
In the 23rd overall pick they get a true top target, outstanding value to boot. Exactly the need they had to hit.
R2.6
· Pick 38
· Armand Membou
· OT
· rank 33
Fair-plus on Armand Membou, a quiet win that adds up over a draft. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R2.21
· Pick 53
· Benjamin Morrison
· CB
· rank 45
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Benjamin Morrison in pick No. 53. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.22
· Pick 54
· Xavier Watts
· S
· rank 46
They read the board right and Xavier Watts was the payoff at the Round 2 slot. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R3.5
· Pick 69
· Alfred Collins
· DT
· rank 57
Alfred Collins at pick 69 is money in the bank, a interior defensive lineman taken below his worth. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
R3.20
· Pick 84
· Azareye'h Thomas
· CB
· rank 62
A curious use of Round 3, Pick 20. Edge rusher and quarterback needed the pick; a cornerback in Azareye'h Thomas did not.
R3.23
· Pick 87
· Elijah Arroyo
· TE
· rank 77
A slide stopped in No. 87, with Elijah Arroyo worth more than the price. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R4.4
· Pick 105
· Cam Skattebo
· RB
· rank 105
They paid sticker price for Cam Skattebo in the 105th pick, and that is fine. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
R5.6
· Pick 145
· Smael Mondon Jr.
· LB
· rank 110
Circle this one: Smael Mondon Jr. at slot 145 is a fall that decides a draft. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
R5.21
· Pick 160
· Earnest Greene III
· OT
· rank 153
Earnest Greene III in Round 5, Pick 21 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
R7.4
· Pick 222
· Chimere Dike
· WR
· rank 203
Chimere Dike in the 222nd pick is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
