They will call it conviction in the building and a reach everywhere else: Jaheim Bell, 31 picks early at No. 110.
That is a wide receiver worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. The cornerback spot stays a question, and it was the one they most needed an answer at. The Chargers paired the rookies with proven help, Kader Kohou leading the way.
Bottom line, with Jared Verse leading the way, this is a class that should pay off fast and rarely be regretted.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 22 they get a quarterback's worst nightmare. The biggest hole, addressed.
Nice patience on Keon Coleman, who had no business lasting to No. 37. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Kris Jenkins in Round 2, Pick 16 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Audric Estime at the 75th pick is a steep price for a hunch, hard to square with any board. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
They liked Braelon Allen enough to skip the value, taking him in the 97th overall pick. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A top-tier wide receiver at a bargain, Johnny Wilson in slot 105, plain and simple. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They reached into another round for Jaheim Bell, and the board is nowhere close to agreeing. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Tommy Eichenberg at pick 119 is a conviction pick that outran the value. It adds depth where they could use a little.
By-the-book stuff, Leonard Taylor III at the 121st overall pick squarely in line with his ranking. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They paid a round early for Dallin Holker in slot 137, more than the board wanted. The roster fit checks out.
A reach for Jaylen Wright in the Round 5 slot; a little patience would have been rewarded. A need, and now a little less of one.
They paid sticker price for Sincere Haynesworth in pick No. 156, and that is fine. It fills a real need, too.
They jumped the gun on Michael Barrett, taking him earlier than his grade liked. Stacking talent where they were already deep.
They paid up for Jontrey Hunter at No. 226 when waiting would have done the job. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A slide stopped in the 242nd pick, with Omar Speights worth more than the price. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
