Somewhere a scout is still blinking. The Cowboys spent slot 245 on Desmond Evans, a name the board had a full 59 spots lower.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is Jacobs. Leaving quarterback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
Not a headline-grabber, but a perfectly good weekend's work.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 25 they get a No. 1 receiver at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Patrick Paul at the 56th overall pick is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Jonathon Brooks at Round 3, Pick 24 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
They paid sticker price for Tommy Eichenberg in No. 124, and that is fine. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
A quiet steal in the 174th pick: Chau Smith-Wade for less than the market said. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
The board fumbled Curtis Jacobs all the way to the Round 6 slot, and they scooped it up. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Chad Lindberg in the Round 6 slot, miles early. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Desmond Evans at pick 245 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
