Houston Texans

The Texans reached for Burch and never recovered. Grade: F.

by Drane04 · 2024 NFL Draft · 15 picks · 1 steals · 4 reaches

Need B

Future C-

Somebody took the Texans to the cleaners. The deals they made bled real value, and the whole class wears it.

If Burch pans out, nobody remembers the price. If not, this is the pick they hear about. The bill for those future picks comes due whether the class hits or not.

That is a linebacker worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly.

There is no spinning it; the board won this weekend going away.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.30 · Pick 30 · T'Vondre Sweat · DL · rank 32
In pick No. 30 they get a wrecking ball inside. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
R2.1 · Pick 33 · Keon Coleman · WR · rank 39
Keon Coleman at No. 33 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
R2.5 · Pick 37 · Cooper Beebe · OG · rank 55
Cooper Beebe at the 37th pick is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Kris Abrams-Draine · CB · rank 36
They did well to land Kris Abrams-Draine in the Round 2 slot, just ahead of his grade. Useful body for a position without much behind the starter.
R2.8 · Pick 40 · Javon Foster · OT · rank 54
Javon Foster at Round 2, Pick 8 jumps the queue by a touch more than is comfortable. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
R3.11 · Pick 75 · Maason Smith · DT-EDGE · rank 78
Maason Smith in slot 75 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. The roster logic is harder to follow.
R3.29 · Pick 92 · Spencer Rattler · QB · rank 96
Spencer Rattler at the 92nd overall pick is right where the board had him, plain and simple. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R3.30 · Pick 93 · Braelon Allen · RB · rank 99
A straight-up fair deal on Braelon Allen at pick 93, value and slot in agreement. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Junior Colson · LB · rank 120
No edge and no loss on Junior Colson in pick 117; it is a wash and a sensible one. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
R4.26 · Pick 126 · James Williams · S · rank 129
A market-rate safety, with the board and the slot shaking hands on James Williams. A minor itch, scratched.
R4.27 · Pick 127 · Cade Stover · TE · rank 136
Cade Stover at the 127th pick is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. The roster fit checks out.
R5.18 · Pick 154 · Ainias Smith · WR · rank 161
They paid sticker price for Ainias Smith in slot 154, and that is fine. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R5.30 · Pick 166 · Jordan Burch · DE-EDGE · rank 192
Jordan Burch at pick No. 166 is the pick scouts circle, and not in a good way. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
R7.14 · Pick 234 · Reuben Fatheree II · OT · rank 231
Reuben Fatheree II in the 234th overall pick lands just on the right side of the ledger. It fills a real need, too.
R7.18 · Pick 238 · Francisco Mauigoa · LB · rank 224
Francisco Mauigoa is a better player than No. 238 suggests; smart patience, rewarded. Another box on the needs board, quietly ticked.
