The Chargers looked at the value chart, folded it up, and took JD Bertrand at the 184th overall pick regardless, 21 picks early.
A whole weekend of picks and interior defensive lineman is somehow still a want. Landing Hardy that late papers over a lot of smaller sins. Edge rusher was the priority and it is no longer a question, which is most of the job.
Solid rather than spectacular, and there is nothing wrong with that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 7 they get a mismatch in the passing game at fair value. A real need, handled.
Ennis Rakestraw Jr. in the Round 2 slot is fair value, right on his grade. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
They took Tyler Guyton at par in pick 38, which is nothing to complain about. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A straight-up fair deal on Trey Benson at the 69th pick, value and slot in agreement. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Darius Robinson in No. 106 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Cole Bishop at pick No. 139 is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. A minor itch, scratched.
They paid sticker price for Javon Baker in No. 183, and that is fine. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
This one needs a full-page explanation: JD Bertrand in the 184th pick, miles early. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They liked Kingsley Eguakun enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 7 slot. A need, and now a little less of one.
Value with a capital V on Daequan Hardy in pick No. 256, a genuine coup. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
