New England Patriots

The Patriots fleeced the room on the phones and earned a B.

If confidence were a draft strategy, the Patriots would have aced it. Keaten Wade at the 216th overall pick is 158 spots clear of where he belonged.

The phones were where this weekend was really won. Spending an early pick on linebacker with quarterback and running back open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. A whole weekend of picks and quarterback is somehow still a want.

Good work on the whole, with quarterback the one box left unchecked.

Pick-by-Pick

R1.32 · Pick 32 · Blake Miller · OT · rank 46
In the Round 1 slot they get an anchor for the offensive line, though they paid up to get him. A clean fit for the roster.
R2.7 · Pick 39 · Joshua Josephs · DE-EDGE · rank 45
No edge and no loss on Joshua Josephs in the 39th overall pick; it is a wash and a sensible one. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
R2.10 · Pick 42 · CJ Allen · LB · rank 32
They let CJ Allen come to them and pounced at No. 42. A minor need, but a need all the same.
R2.28 · Pick 60 · A.J. Haulcy · S · rank 50
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing A.J. Haulcy in pick No. 60. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
R3.1 · Pick 65 · Elijah Sarratt · WR · rank 77
Elijah Sarratt at pick 65 is a conviction pick that outran the value. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
R3.24 · Pick 88 · Sam Roush · TE · rank 93
They took Sam Roush at par in the 88th pick, which is nothing to complain about. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
R3.32 · Pick 96 · Michael Trigg · TE · rank 117
Michael Trigg in the Round 3 slot is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
R4.17 · Pick 117 · Harold Perkins Jr. · LB · rank 134
A surprising call. With quarterback and running back still to address, they spent No. 117 on Harold Perkins Jr., a linebacker they were not short of.
R4.34 · Pick 134 · DeMonte Capehart · DT · rank 138
DeMonte Capehart at the 134th pick is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
R5.26 · Pick 166 · Febechi Nwaiwu · OG · rank 179
The board had cheaper options than Febechi Nwaiwu at slot 166, and it noticed. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
R6.35 · Pick 216 · Keaten Wade · DE-EDGE · rank 374
A real head-scratcher, Keaten Wade in pick 216 is miles ahead of his ranking. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
R7.8 · Pick 224 · Thaddeus Dixon · CB · rank 229
A market-rate cornerback, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Thaddeus Dixon. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
