Start where it matters. The Patriots took Drake Maye to run the offense for the next decade, and every other decision this weekend bends around that one. Call it a C- and check back in two years.
If one pick saves this weekend, it is McConkey. They handed away value on the phones that the picks cannot earn back.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They are betting Oladapo proves the room right and everyone else wrong.
With edge rusher and interior defensive lineman unsolved, spending premium capital on TE-EDGE is the choice that costs them.
It grades out a shrug today, with plenty of room to move either way.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick 4 they get a passer to set the clock by at fair value. A real need, handled.
Xavier Legette in No. 34 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They liked Patrick Paul enough to skip the value, taking him in the Round 2 slot. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
The board fumbled Ladd McConkey all the way to the 68th overall pick, and they scooped it up. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
Sedrick Van Pran at slot 77 is a conviction pick that outran the value. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Good price on Christian Mahogany in Round 3, Pick 18, a hair ahead of his grade with no real quibbles. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Cade Stover adds a TE-EDGE and leaves edge rusher and interior defensive lineman untouched.
They took Matt Goncalves at par in the 103rd pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Ben Sinnott at the Round 5 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. The roster fit checks out.
They talked themselves into Kitan Oladapo at pick 140, and the board did not agree. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A reasonable price with a little left over, Jaylan Ford in the 182nd pick. Useful depth more than a marquee fix.
Good things come to war rooms that wait, and Jawhar Jordan at No. 224 is the proof. A need, and now a little less of one.
Sheridan Jones at Round 7, Pick 12 is money in the bank, a cornerback taken below his worth. A minor need, but a need all the same.
