The Cowboys clearly saw something nobody else did in Emory Jones, taking him 172 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced.
They punted on interior defensive lineman, and it is the miss that keeps the grade honest. Getting Wiley where they did is the sort of value that quietly makes a class.
The dealing tilted against them, just enough to notice. Job largely done: wide receiver settled and 7 of 8 of the wish list covered.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Kalen King in Round 2, Pick 12, and that is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Nothing to complain about; Patrick Paul went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
They stopped a slide they were happy to see, landing Christian Haynes in pick 87. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
They reached a country mile for Max Melton at the 93rd overall pick, and the board is aghast. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
No edge and no loss on Cedric Gray in pick No. 124; it is a wash and a sensible one. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
A market-rate running back, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Isaiah Davis. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
De'Corian Clark in pick 190 is exactly on the number, no argument either way. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
A quiet steal in slot 212: Jared Wiley for less than the market said. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
Value said wait; Emory Jones in the 245th pick says they were not listening. A need, and now a little less of one.
