You could see the war room lean forward. Malachi Fields at pick No. 117 is the sort of fall that does not happen, except it just did.
The edge rusher hole is the one line item this class does not answer. Spending an early pick on cornerback with edge rusher, linebacker and other spots open is the decision the grade keeps circling back to. They are betting the present roster is worth a lighter draft next spring.
Bottom line, more hits than misses and a roster nudged the right way.
Pick-by-Pick
They paid sticker price for Emmanuel Pregnon in pick No. 36, and that is fine. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They took Jonah Coleman at par in the 64th overall pick, which is nothing to complain about. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Value with a capital V on Jake Slaughter in No. 67, a genuine coup. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They went early on Tacario Davis in the 96th pick, and the value did not follow. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
They robbed the room for Michael Taaffe here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Taking Malachi Fields in Round 4, Pick 17 is close to grand larceny; a wide receiver that good had no business lasting this long. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
Hard to square with the roster. With positions of obvious need still on the board, Jalon Kilgore adds a cornerback and leaves edge rusher, linebacker and other spots untouched.
A straight-up fair deal on Ephesians Prysock at slot 188, value and slot in agreement. Pure best-available; the position was not exactly begging.
