The Cowboys torched the value chart for Seth McLaughlin, taking him 71 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. It does the job without flash, and the B reflects it.
That Smith pick is the receipt they will wave around later. A whole weekend of picks and linebacker is somehow still a want.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with wide receiver chief among the fixes.
A competent weekend that does not make headlines and does not need to.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 12 they get protection for the quarterback. Exactly the need they had to hit.
No drama and no debate, T.J. Sanders went about where he belonged in No. 44. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
Nothing to complain about; Maxwell Hairston went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Taking Riley Leonard in pick 150 is close to grand larceny; a quarterback that good had no business lasting this long. A need, and now a little less of one.
They talked themselves into Seth McLaughlin at the 170th overall pick, and the board did not agree. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Somehow Tory Horton was still sitting there in slot 172, and they pounced on premier wide receiver value. The one spot they could not leave alone, and did not.
A running back of that caliber at slot 174 is the definition of value, full stop. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Jason Marshall Jr. in No. 190 is fine work, a shade of surplus and no downside. It answers the question that was keeping the coaches up at night.
They left a pile of value on the table to take Brant Kuithe this early at Round 6, Pick 33. The roster fit checks out.
Joey Slackman in the 249th overall pick is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
