The Patriots bet big and early on Kaimon Rucker, 68 picks ahead of the board. Bold does not always mean right. Good, not great, and the B says as much.
That is a cornerback worth more than the slot they spent on him, plainly. They covered a lot of ground and still skipped quarterback, which is a strange place to end up.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the quarterback spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 4th pick they get an anchor for the defensive front at fair value. Exactly the need they had to hit.
Nice patience on Jalon Walker, who had no business lasting to pick 38. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
A quiet steal in No. 69: Elic Ayomanor for less than the market said. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
Kaimon Rucker in pick No. 77 is a reach so steep the board needed a second look to believe it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A real head-scratcher, Shemar Turner in slot 105 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
They talked themselves into Hayden Conner at the Round 5 slot, and the board did not agree. It fills a real need, too.
Nohl Williams at No. 219 is daylight robbery; nobody expected him to last. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
Corey Kiner in pick 222 is a gift, value that borders on unfair. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A top-tier safety at a bargain, Jonas Sanker in slot 240, plain and simple. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
