The Packers clearly saw something nobody else did in Jaylen Wright, taking him 33 picks ahead of his grade. The board is not convinced. It does the job without flash, and the B- reflects it.
With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots unsolved, spending premium capital on safety is the choice that costs them. Leaving edge rusher unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall. Whatever else happened, they won the night they took Wiggins.
They went 3 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
Good work on the whole, with edge rusher the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a lockdown presence outside, and a steal at that. The biggest hole, addressed.
A premium they did not need to pay, Graham Barton a notch or two before his time. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Edgerrin Cooper. A quiet depth add at a thin-ish spot.
A reach on Tykee Smith in the Round 3 slot; the board had better options right there. A minor itch, scratched.
Of all the spots to shop, they chose safety. Jaden Hicks in pick No. 91 leaves edge rusher, quarterback and other spots for later.
A real head-scratcher, Jaylen Wright in pick 125 is miles ahead of his ranking. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
A surprising call. With edge rusher, quarterback and other spots still to address, they spent pick No. 135 on Cedric Gray, a linebacker they were not short of.
