You build a draft on nights like this. Ryan Fitzgerald had no business being available in No. 247, and the Commanders did the only sane thing and turned in the card.
The trade ledger is the best part of the whole weekend. Leaving cornerback unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The veteran additions, Myles Garrett chief among them, give the class a floor the rookies alone would not. It is a win-now wager, and the future is the stake.
Good work on the whole, with cornerback the one box left unchecked.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 29 they get a No. 1 receiver at a price that makes it sweeter. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
They barely believed it either: Harold Fannin Jr. still on the board at the 61st pick. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
They robbed the room for Tyleik Williams here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. The roster fit checks out.
Dylan Fairchild at pick 146 is a first-round grade at a bargain-bin price, no notes. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Circle this one: Jordan James at No. 203 is a fall that decides a draft. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
Jordan Hancock in Round 7, Pick 20 should not have been possible, and that is the whole point. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
A specialist of that caliber at the Round 7 slot is the definition of value, full stop. A want more than a need, though you can never have too many.
A straight-up fair deal on Garrett Dellinger at slot 256, value and slot in agreement. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
