The Texans torched the value chart for Mason Fairchild, taking him 51 spots sooner than anyone had him slotted. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
The Shipley value carries more weight than any single miss elsewhere. That edge rusher hole did not close this weekend, and it was the biggest one on the wall.
All told, a solid class that does its job everywhere but edge rusher.
Pick-by-Pick
In pick No. 23 they get a potential shutdown corner at fair value. More want than need.
Steal is underselling it; Xavier Legette at pick 58 is a heist with the alarm still ringing. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
Leonard Taylor III at Round 3, Pick 27 is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
Sataoa Laumea at the Round 4 slot is a sensible buy, a touch better than market for the offensive lineman. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
A market-rate linebacker, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Cedric Gray. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
Taking Will Shipley in the 163rd overall pick is close to grand larceny; a running back that good had no business lasting this long. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Mason Fairchild at slot 239 is an overdraft of the loud, memorable kind. It fills a real need, too.
Walter Rouse at the Round 7 slot is right where the board had him, plain and simple. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
