Nobody had Josh Williams this high, and it is not close. The Texans reached 29 spots to get him at the 248th pick. A sturdy weekend that grades out a B-.
However the rest shakes out, Simpson at that price is a win they earned. Leaving wide receiver unaddressed is the roster risk they will have to answer for in the fall.
The roster is better shaped than it was, with running back chief among the fixes.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In Round 1, Pick 23 they get a premier pass rusher, even if it was a touch early. It fills the loudest need on the roster.
No drama and no debate, T'Vondre Sweat went about where he belonged in No. 59. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
Cooper Beebe in pick 85 lands just on the right side of the ledger. It patches a soft spot without any drama.
They did well to land Kris Abrams-Draine in the 123rd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. Depth more than a fix, but depth they can use.
They liked Ben Sinnott enough to skip the value, taking him in slot 127. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
A tidy bit of business in the Round 5 slot, where Jaylin Simpson graded well above the range. A want dressed up as a pick, at a spot they had covered.
A conviction pick on Walter Rouse at Round 7, Pick 19 that the board grades a round light. The roster fit checks out.
Josh Williams at the 248th pick is the kind of overdraft that needs everything to break right. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
