The Texans treated their own grade as gospel and everyone else's as noise, spending Round 5, Pick 28 on Quincy Riley a full 64 spots early.
They banked enough surplus on Winston Jr. to cover a lot of smaller sins. For all the activity, running back went untouched, which is hard to explain.
In sum, a sturdy weekend with one asterisk, the running back spot they never got to.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 25th pick they get a blindside protector, even if it was a touch early. A clean fit for the roster.
Deone Walker in Round 2, Pick 26 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
A market-rate wide receiver, with the board and the slot shaking hands on Tez Johnson. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
They robbed the room for Kevin Winston Jr. here, a fall nobody at the table saw coming. A minor need, but a need all the same.
They talked themselves into Quincy Riley at pick No. 165, and the board did not agree. It thickens a room that could stand to be thicker.
Jonah Monheim in slot 241 is the kind of fall that makes a whole class. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
