There is conviction, and then there is this. The Texans took Matthew Jones a full 53 picks ahead of where the board had him, an overdraft steep enough that it colors the whole weekend.
The running back hole is the one line item this class does not answer. They went 6 of 8 on their needs, which is most of what a draft is for.
All told, a draft that does its job without fuss, and there is real value in that.
Pick-by-Pick
In slot 28 they get a matchup problem out wide. The biggest hole, addressed.
They paid sticker price for Chris Braswell in pick 49, and that is fine. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
By-the-book stuff, Nazir Stackhouse at pick No. 90 squarely in line with his ranking. A glaring weakness, addressed head on.
Max Melton at Round 4, Pick 17 is right where the board had him, plain and simple. Not urgent, but hardly pointless.
They jumped the gun on Cade Stover, taking him earlier than his grade liked. A sensible fit that makes the depth chart a little sturdier.
A reach on Jaylan Ford in the 154th pick; the board had better options right there. It fills a real need, too.
They took Reuben Fatheree II at par in the 234th pick, which is nothing to complain about. The roster fit checks out.
This one needs a full-page explanation: Matthew Jones in Round 7, Pick 18, miles early. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
