The Jacob Dobbs selection is the head-turner. The Chargers reached 180 spots for him, and it will define how this weekend is remembered. The board sounded every alarm, and the F is the fallout.
They lost the exchange badly enough to drag the whole class down. For all the activity, quarterback went untouched, which is hard to explain.
Spend now, pay later; the math only works if this class delivers. If one pick saves this weekend, it is Smith.
About as rough as a weekend gets on paper, with quarterback still staring back at them.
Pick-by-Pick
In the 6th pick they get juice off the edge. Exactly the need they had to hit.
A market-rate offensive lineman, with the board and the slot shaking hands on JC Latham. It shores up a spot that genuinely needed the help.
In pick No. 22 they get a ballhawk on the back end at fair value. More want than need.
In slot 26 they get the heartbeat of the defense, even if it was a touch early. Need was not the driver here.
Terrion Arnold at No. 33 nudges the ledger their way without any fuss. They walked in needing this and walked out with it.
They read the board right and Adonai Mitchell was the payoff at Round 2, Pick 7. It also answers one of the loudest questions on the roster.
They paid a round early for Jonathon Brooks in the 46th pick, more than the board wanted. A real hole, addressed with a reasonable pick.
A premium they did not need to pay, Jackson Powers-Johnson a notch or two before his time. It plugs a real leak on the depth chart.
McKinnley Jackson at Round 3, Pick 9 is a clear overpay, with better names still on the board. Top of the wish list, and they did not leave without it.
Nothing to complain about; D.J. James went a shade earlier than his grade, which is fine. That was the need underlined and circled, and now it is checked off.
Howard Cross III at No. 110 is neither steal nor reach, just the going rate. The biggest hole on the depth chart just got a whole lot smaller.
They did well to land Cade Stover in the 143rd overall pick, just ahead of his grade. One more legitimate question on the roster, answered.
Ainias Smith at the Round 6 slot is the sort of value that quietly wins a weekend. This was priority one on the needs board, and now it is handled.
They paid sticker price for Ajani Cornelius in pick 179, and that is fine. A sensible fit for a spot that needed help.
Darius Robinson in slot 184 is the kind of reach that only looks good if he outplays it. Better still, it is exactly the hole they had to fill.
A swing that ignored the value entirely, Jacob Dobbs well ahead of where he belonged. Insurance at a position that did not really ask for it.
Hayden Hatten in Round 7, Pick 13 is a bet on their own eyes over everyone else's grade. A must-fix position, and they treated it like one.
